The checklist

Ten things to check on any gaming laptop
  1. 1

    Graphics card (GPU) tier

The GPU decides most of your frame rate. Match the tier to the screen: RTX 5050 and 5060 suit 1080p/1200p screens; RTX 5070 Ti, with 12 GB of video memory, suits 1440p/1600p screens and higher settings.

  2. 2

    The GPU's power limit (TGP)

The same GPU name can run at different maximum power in different laptops. Look for “max graphics power” or “TGP” in watts on the maker's spec page, and compare like for like.

  3. 3

    Processor

Compare the exact processor model and how much power and cooling the laptop gives it: the same chip can perform differently in different laptops. “HX” chips (such as Core i7-14650HX or Core Ultra 9 275HX) are made for high-power laptops.

  4. 4

    Memory (RAM)

16 GB is the practical minimum. Check how it is installed (one module or two) and whether a slot is free to upgrade later; the spec sheet or manual says if RAM is soldered.

  5. 5

    Storage

Games are large, so 1 TB fills faster than you expect and 512 GB fills very quickly. Check for a free second M.2 slot so you can add a drive.

  6. 6

    Screen

Check resolution, refresh rate (Hz), brightness (nits) and colour coverage (sRGB or DCI-P3). Dim, washed-out panels are a common way to cut cost on sale models.

  7. 7

    MUX switch or Advanced Optimus

Lets the GPU drive the built-in screen directly, which can raise frame rates in some games. Look for either term on the spec sheet; not every laptop has one.

  8. 8

    Cooling and noise

Read independent reviews for temperatures and fan noise under load, and keep the vents clear; gaming on a soft surface blocks airflow.

  9. 9

    Ports and charger

Check the HDMI version, USB-C with DisplayPort and charging, Ethernet if you play online, and the size of the charger you'll carry.

  10. 10

    Seller, returns and warranty

Note who sells and ships it, the return window (holiday windows can be longer) and the warranty length before you buy, especially on sale days.

Which GPU tier?

Video memory from NVIDIA's laptop GPU specs
GPUVideo memoryGood fit
RTX 5050 Laptop8 GB1080p esports and lighter games
RTX 5060 Laptop8 GB1080p/1200p at high settings
RTX 5070 Laptop8 GBHigher frame rates at 1080p/1200p
RTX 5070 Ti Laptop12 GB1440p/1600p and higher settings; more room for creative work

Within a tier, the laptop maker's power limit (TGP), cooling and screen still make a real difference.

FAQ

Is an RTX 5070 Ti laptop worth it over an RTX 5060?

If you play at 1440p/1600p or want higher settings, the RTX 5070 Ti's 12 GB of video memory and higher tier help. For a 1080p/1200p screen, an RTX 5060 laptop is often enough; compare the power limits (TGP) of the exact models.

What is TGP and where do I find it?

TGP is the maximum power the laptop maker lets the graphics chip use, in watts. It is usually on the maker's spec page as “max graphics power” or “TGP”; listings often leave it out.

Is 16 GB of RAM enough in 2026?

For gaming alone, 16 GB is a reasonable minimum. If you also stream, edit or keep many apps open, 32 GB, or a laptop you can upgrade, gives more headroom.

Do I need a MUX switch?

It isn't essential, but a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus can raise frame rates in some games by letting the GPU drive the screen directly. Check the spec sheet for either term.

Should I buy on Black Friday?

Sale prices can be good, but check the exact model number and specs, who sells it, and the return window. A cheaper sale model may differ from the one you researched.
